Эдгар Пенгборн (1909-1976) дебютировал в фантастике поздно, в 1951 г., и написал в этом жанре очень немного - однако навсегда остался в истории американской и мировой научной фантастики как один из ярчайших и оригинальнейших ее представителей.
Достаточно сказать, что самое известное из произведений Пенгборна, роман "Зеркало для наблюдателей", был удостоен Международной премии по фантастике - "в компании" с "Городом" Саймака и "Властелином Колец" Толкина.

La compagnia della gloria è l’ultimo romanzo scritto da Pangborn ed è stato pubblicato in America giusto un anno prima della sua morte. È un romanzo che per alcuni versi si riallaccia al suo celebre Davy: è ambientato anch’esso a pochi decenni di distanza dalla catastrofe, e ci presenta il personaggio di Demetrio il narratore, amato dal popolo per le sue affascinanti storie dei tempi antichi, piene di oggetti miracolosi come i telefoni e gli aeroplani, i televisori e le automobili; tutte cose che ormai la società non sa più costruire. Ma Demetrio è anche temuto dai potenti, perché un uomo che narra a tutti le antiche verità può diventare pericoloso. Così, egli è costretto a fuggire con i suoi compagni: insieme si avviano verso un viaggio pieno di dolori e di gioie inattesi, che tocca i reami della fantasia, della filosofia e delle possibilità umane.

The novel is set in the Northeastern United States some centuries after an atomic war ended high-technology civilization. The novel follows its title character, Davy (who grew up a ward of the state and thus has no last name) as he grows to manhood in a pseudo-medieval society dominated by a Church that actively suppresses technology, banning “anything that may contain atoms.” Davy begins as an indentured servant in an inn, but escapes, and most of the novel is concerned with his adventures. The book is written as though Davy himself were writing his memoirs, with footnotes by people who knew him.

Nominated for Hugo Award for Best Novel in 1965.

Когда, в конце концов, прибывает спасательный корабль, герои решают остаться в в построенной ими общине. Завершает книгу характерный для творчества Пенгборна психологический финал.
